How is the interface created for the device?

When you press a button or key, how does it know what to do? For example, when you press a button on a cell phone, how does it know what letter or number to show on the screen, especially when the functions of buttons change for different applications?

I have built my own systems since 1998 and really at this point do have much of a choice to buy parts anywhere else. My systems motherboard especially don’t last any longer than the store bought 2 year warranty. The first pc I built is still working fine however I purchased all those components at a local computer shop which isn’t in business anymore. Power supply are not any better either. Does anyone else have this problem? OEm computers seen to outlast everything. Whats wrong with these components at Fry’s? Are playing Frisbee in the backroom with our parts…..

We have Roaches,all kinds of roaches (I don’t ask them what kind they are,I don’t get this personal thank you), water bugs,( Palmeto bugs).
